Do you ever get the uncontrollable urge to eat something sweet and sugary right after a meal or randomly during the day? This a common occurrence, very easily explained. You can also control it by changing your attitude towards sugar, salt, and food in general. Your body is a temple and it deserves care. How can you regulate your cravings? Here’s an expert opinion.
When you do not consume enough calories, your body will demand energy. Hence, sugar cravings! Sugar is the main source of energy for our brains. Sugar also tastes good and releases endorphins that calm and relax us giving a “natural high”. All of these together and “rewarding” yourself with a sweet treat after each craving leads to bad eating habits which reinforce cravings.
There are several reasons why you might feel cravings. Each body is different, but some traits are common to all.
Your diet is a crucial factor in unlocking the secret behind your cravings. Either you didn’t eat enough, your body is lacking a certain nutrient or you ate too much of the wrong thing.
As mentioned before, when you don’t eat well-balanced meals, your body will demand energy. If you are lacking in magnesium, these cravings will manifest in the form of your body asking for chocolate. Lack of magnesium leads to bad sleeping patterns, even insomnia, which in turn leads to overconsumption of sugar so you can get through the day.
You might think that reaching for salty snacks while grocery shopping would help control your sugar cravings. You’re wrong. The more salty food you eat, the bigger your cravings. So when eating out, skip the fries so later you’ll skip the cookies. Eat naturally salty food like cheese or olives, and tea sweetened with a spoonful of honey will satisfy your cravings.
Identify which sugar you are craving and substitute it! If you are dreaming of donuts, Haribos, and chocolate, you are eating artificial sweeteners and processed sugar that do not fuel your body, but rather give you a false sense of satisfaction. Sugar gives you a short high burst of energy followed by a crash. Processed sugar has been proven to be as addictive as hard drugs like cocaine, meth, and heroin. It presents similar symptoms, including bingeing, craving, tolerance, withdrawal, and others. You read that right, withdrawal just like a drug addict experiences after they stop taking drugs.
If you are craving fruits, then your body is on track, and we can only congratulate you!
Here comes the magical substitute: raw honey! Raw honey is a great source of carbohydrates which means that it’s a great source of natural energy. The beauty in raw honey is that it gives a constant burst of energy, unlike sugar. In turn, raw honey is an all-natural, addiction-free substance that is beneficial to you from all fronts. Raw honey is stored in the body after consumption and gets slowly released into the bloodstream to maintain a natural sustainable burst of energy.
For those of you who are on diets, be careful: raw honey has the same calories as processed sugar. Make sure to not overeat!
Moreover, raw honey is extremely beneficial for brain health. Nowadays, with online schooling that requires a lot more effort and concentration from the kids’ side, they need a little pick-me-up. Why not make it a healthy treat and enforce healthy eating habits from a young age?

Take advantage of the season. The end of summer is known to be the perfect time for picking fruits to make jams. Mix some raw honey jam (we recommend mulberry) with some yogurt. There you have it, an afternoon snack.
Make some changes in your kitchen, and we don’t mean redecorating. Incorporate honey in your homemade baked goods. Raw honey is great for breads, cakes, muffins, and pies. A good rule of thumb is to use 1/2 – 3/4 cup of honey for each one cup of sugar in the recipe. Reduce the liquid by 1/4 cup for each cup of sugar replaced. Reduce cooking temperature by almost 4 degrees. Honey makes baked goods brown more easily. If the recipe doesn’t already include baking soda, add 1/4 tsp for each cup of sugar replaced.
You can experiment with different raw honey flavors to find your favorite for each type of delicacies. For example, if you’re baking a chocolate pie, get yourself some Carob Tyre raw honey to use instead of chocolate. Or you can substitute sugar for clover raw honey to bake a Honey Ricotta Cheesecake!
